She looks down on the city from the balcony, watching the lights moving in the streets below. In a way it is her city, for all that she has no title to it. She knows its highways and byways, and she knows its stinking, rotten heart better even than the one that beats inside her. She has suffered for her city, and it has given her little thanks for her valour, but still she will defend it even with her last breath.
